Warrior Bonfire Program
Vicksburg, MS (National Reach)
The Warrior Bonfire Program began serving post 9/11 Purple Heart Veterans in January of 2013, by pulling together small groups of six at a time to travel to various parts of the country to do various activities such as fishing, hunting, skiing, rafting, kayaking, surfing, hiking and more. The purpose is to provide: a network of support among military brothers and sisters that understand, provide an example of how to stay active as they battle Veteran Isolation, and encourage lifestyle choices of activities versus self-medication. The program includes peer to peer support and battle buddy checks from our Purple Heart Ambassadors which are members that have attended multiple Bonfire events and are answering the call to support.
On average we organize 18 trip retreats per year and have completed more than 50 events in the first 5 years of service. We are currently we are supporting 300 plus members from across the United States. Our events are for Veterans and active duty service members only, with an occasional event that can support spouses in attendance. We partner with other organizations that provide events similar to ours for families but are working to grow in these areas. Members can travel to multiple events with priority given to new members that have not yet attended one of our events. All expenses are covered to include travel to and from the event.
